Edelweiß

Edelweiss
Salzburg, Austria
5% alc $1.90 per bottle LCBO

Continuously on the hunt for more new beers to drink, and in keeping with my last review I came across a real gem from Austria called Edelweiss. Edelweiss beer is Austria's top selling weissbier, and originates from the foothills of the Alps in Salzburg. The Edelweiss brand name comes from the flower that is only found up in the Alps, and it symbolizes purity and singularity.

After recently reviewing the dark and smoky Bavarian weissbier 'Schneider-Weisse', I can't help but compare and contrast to the Edelweiss - cloudy and wheaty yes, however much lighter in colour, and milder in taste. What stands out for me is its distinction in taste - subtly citrusy, floral and with a kick up the backside of winter spices. The bottle is very simple and slick with a raised silhouette of the Austrian Alps.

Overall - 4/5 Edelweiss was equally as enjoyable as the Schneider-Weisse of Bavaria. Lighter, but still a powerful combination of wheat, citrus, and winter spice. The perfect beer to try as we enter the fall season.
